WOTC reveal one D&D, Dragonlance Campaign, Planescape Setting and more

Loads of new D&D stuff announced!

Wizards presents revealed tonnes of juicy updates for D&D and a lot of the new releases and updates we can expect over the next couple of years. Biggest among them is One D&D, the next iteration of D&D which will be an evolution of 5th edition rather than a new edition as we’ve seen previously. Alongside this were plans to evolve D&D Beyond platform into a full virtual tabletop, a deeper dive into Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen and its companion game, Warriors of Krynn as well as the books we can expect next year including a Planescape setting book. Read on for more details about all these announcements or watch the full video below.

One D&D

Wizards of the Coast explained that they see D&D 5th Edition as the ultimate edition that has resonated most with fans and as such, will no longer release D&D in editions, but will simply evolve 5th edition in what they call One D&D. The next evolution will arrive in 2024.

With this evolution will be the re-release of the 3 core rulebooks; The Player’s Handbooks, The Dungeon Master’s Guide and the Monster Manual. While we can expect changes, edits and updates, these won’t change drastically from what we currently know. We’re more likely to see the types of changes we’ve already seen in recent rulebooks like changes to racial stat increases, feats as part of backgrounds and monster stats without spell lists among other things.

Of particular note was the fact that the Dungeon Master’s Guide will receive some larger restructuring to help newer DMs (with experienced DMs likely needing the tips available here less).

D&D Beyond

Merged into Wizard’s plans for One D&D are their plans for their newly acquired digital D&D platform, D&D Beyond. They’re working on turning it into a fully virtual tabletop system with character models and 3d settings that you can build and use for your own games and more. It’s currently in an early alpha stage, but it genuinely looks like a tabletop game in a virtual space.

Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen

We got a much closer look at the next campaign book coming this Autumn in the setting of Dragonlance (a first for 5th edition). Players will find themselves in the world of Krynn during the War of the Lance dealing with related, but a separate set of events that occurred in the Dragonlance Chronicles books in the brand new campaign, Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen.

Wizard’s also revealed that a companion game will be released called Warriors of Krynn. A strategy game that can work with the campaign designed by Rob Daviau and Steve Baker. Battle will be fought between the 2 sides of the Solamnian invasion with a mix of miniatures, cards and counters.

Keys from the Golden Vault

In the same vein as Candlekeep Mysteries and Journey’s Through the Radiant Citadel is another anthology of adventures that can be played as one shots, inserted into a campaign or played in succession. Where Keys from the Golden Vault differs is that each adventure will be a heist mission making it the “Oceans Eleven of D&D”. Keys from the Golden Vault will release in early 2023.

Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants

Similar to Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons is a source book all about giants, as hinted at by some recent Unearthed Arcana. We can expect a whole host of information about giants including new variations and stats as well as giant and primordial related character options including subclasses and feats. Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants in Spring 2023.

Book of Many Things

The Book of Many Things will include character options and all sorts of other goodies related to the Deck of Many Things, a magical object of incredible variety and power. Little was revealed about what we can expect from the book but we can expect more information in the future. The Book of Many Things will release in Summer 2023.

Phandelver Campaign

The Phandelver campaign book will expand upon the starter campaign, Lost Mines of Phandelver, expanding it into a fully fledged campaign as well as including the content of the original adventure. The Phandelver Campaign is coming in Summer 2023.

Planescape Setting

Planescape is now coming to 5th edition to integrate the planes of existence into an interconnected setting. Planescape is a setting that draws together all the other planes of existence, interweaving them into a connected cosmology. We can expect greater clarity on how the planes merge in 5th edition as well as character options and possibly even adventures set within the planes of existence. Planescape will be releasing in Autumn 2023.

And that’s pretty much everything. Looks like there’s loads to look forward to and we’ll keep you updated with more information as soon as we get it.
