Dungeon Master’s Guide: Previews Begin October 1st

The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide is almost here!

The updated Dungeon Master’s guide is poised to bring a host of new features, simplifications, and rule changes to enhance the experience of Dungeon Masters and their players. Alongside an updated Player’s Handbook, these books will comprise the most current set of rules for the game, streamlined for easier play and better storytelling.

Wizards of the Coast  have announced that they will kick off the marketing cycle for the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide (DMG) with two videos starting next week. The first video, airing on October 1st, will provide a general overview of the new DMG, while the second video, scheduled for October 3rd, will focus on the all-new Bastion system.

If the new Players Handbook is anything to go by, Wizards of the Coast will have completely revamped the DMG, reworking almost every aspect to make it more intuitive and DM-friendly. Here’s what we know will be included so far:

  • New Adventure and the Greyhawk Campaign Setting: The 2024 DMG will feature an all-new adventure for DMs to run, as well as a Greyhawk campaign setting guide. This includes maps and lore, providing DMs with a ready-to-use classic D&D world, perfect for both new campaigns and ongoing adventures. Greyhawk fans, in particular, will be excited to see this iconic setting updated for modern play.
  • Reworked Magic Items: Magic items have also been reimagined in this edition. While previous versions of the DMG offered a wide range of magic items, the 2024 edition s been teased to hold even more treasures in it’s trove.
  • The Bastion System: One of the most exciting new features coming in the 2024 DMG is the Bastion system, which allows players to build custom strongholds during downtime. These bastions aren’t just for show—they provide mechanical benefits and are expected to have significant in-game impact. Players will be able to customize and manage their strongholds, giving the game a new strategic layer, especially for long-term campaigns. The October 3rd video will dive deeper into this system, offering a more detailed look at how it works and what it can bring to your game.

In addition to the Bastion system, the 2024 DMG will also offer revamped tools for worldbuilding, encounter creation, and magic item customisation.

  • Expanded Worldbuilding Tools: We could expect more detailed guidance on creating immersive worlds. Whether it’s fleshing out a city, designing political structures, or mapping out entire continents, new world-building tools could make it easier for DMs to craft rich, engaging settings that players will want to explore.
  • Better Encounter Design: Designing memorable encounters is a challenge for any DM. The 2024 DMG could aim to simplify this process with updated encounter-building tools, helping DMs balance difficulty, introduce environmental effects, and create multi-phase battles that evolve through the session.

Mark your calendars! The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide will officially release on November 12th, but those eager to get a head start can access the book earlier during an early access window starting for master tier D&D Beyond subscribers on October 29th and on November 5th for hero tier subscribers.

With previews starting on October 1st and early access arriving just a few weeks later, this is an exciting time for D&D fans. Check out the official DnD Youtube channel to stay out to date.
