Bruenor Battlehammer

By Moradin’s hammer

Bruenor Battlehammer was a dwarf and often adventuring companion of Drizzt Do’Urden and member of the adventuring group, Companions of the Hall. He was the 8th, 10th and 13th king of the Mithral Hall. He was also the adoptive father of the humans, Catti-brie (who later married Drizzt Do’Urden) and Wulfgar and was a close personal friend of Drizzt.

Appearance

Bruenor was a dwarf that stood 4.5ft tall with red hair and beard. He lost his right eye in battle (though it was later restored) but this did he leave him with a long scar down his face from his forehead to his jaw. When Bruenor became old, he died but was later reincarnated taking on the appearance of a younger version of himself with the name Reginald Roundshield.

Personality

Bruenor was a strong leader and an equally powerful warrior. He was gruff, proud and strong but had a tender side that was most often expressed to his adopted children, particularly Catti-Brie. Similar to many dwarves, he was proud of his heritage and tended to show some prejudices towards other races but he was kind enough to move beyond those prejudices, which was most exemplified by his abiding friendship with Drizzt Do’Urden.

History

Early Life

When Bruenor was still young, him and his people were driven out of their home, Mithral Hall, by Shimmergloom, a shadow dragon and his Duergar minions. Bruenor’s people escaped to Icewind Dale, settling in Kelvin’s Cairn, close to the ten towns. His people survived by supplying weapons, armour and supplies to the nearby towns. When Bruenor came of age, he became the leader of his people, leading them in the construction of most of Kelvin’s Cairn.

Bruenor long dreamed of reclaiming his ancestral home of Mithral Halls and eventually tricked Drizzt into helping him by pretending to be dying. They were joined by Wulfgar and Regis in the fight of Shimmergloom the shadow dragon. It was Bruenor that defeated the shadow dragon, setting him on fire and riding him to his doom. Bruenor was assumed to be dead following the battle and his companions went about slaying the duergar minions that had made Mithral Halls their home. Bruenor had not died though, and disguised as a drow, covered with ash, he journeyed from the lowest reaches of Mithral Hall to the highest, killing all those that discovered he was not duergar.

Bruenor took his place as king of Mithral Hall, but the peace was short-lived as Drizzt’s borther and sister and a drow raiding party had come to kill Drizzt, killing some of the dwarves of Mithral Hall during their mission. During the combat that ensued between Bruenor, Drizzt and the rest of their group, Wulfgar was killed and Bruenor lost his right eye. These events sent Bruenor into a bout of depression until he discovered that the drow were planning to invade Mithral Hall, causing Bruenor to take responsibility once again for the protection of his people, even killing Yvonnel Baenre in the process, Menzoberranzan’s most powerful matron mother.

Adventures

Bruenor embarked on many adventures, some of the main ones include:

  • Defeating the tanar’ri of the sea of moving ice
  • Bringing Wulfgar back to the material plane after believing him dead for 6 years
  • Defended the town of Shallows from Obould, the orc king, and his horde
  • Battled the combined soul of the liches of the crystal shard, Yharaskrik and the red dragon Hephaestus
  • Found the fabled Gauntlgrym, but was killed by the pit fiend Beealtimatuche

Bruenor was eventually reincarnated as Reginald Roundshield of Citadel Felbarr.
