If you have ever felt like the existing spell list just wasn’t enough, or that your campaign’s magical world needed more fleshing out – Wizards of the Coast has the answer. Arcana Unleashed releases on September 15th, and it is shaping up to be substantial gameplay expansion for spellcaster-focused play.
Alongside it comes Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, a high-level adventure that drops your party into the fractured nation of Thay to go toe-to-toe with the lich Szass Tam himself.
What is Arcana Unleashed?
Presented through the lens of Alustriel Silverhand (human daughter of Mystra, goddess of magic) Arcana Unleashed is a gameplay expansion designed to help DMs and players build high-magic worlds from the ground up. It covers everything from new character options to living magical societies, new creatures, and a treasure vault of arcane items.
Eight new subclasses
The subclass roster is menagerie of magic-wielders. Spellcasters get options including four new Wizard subclasses specialising in the schools of Conjuration, Enchantment, Necromancy, and Transmutation, as well as an Arcana Domain for Clerics and a Vestige Patron for Warlocks – a subclass that draws power from a dying god, which is exactly as dramatic as it sounds.
Martials are not left out either. The Warrior of the Mystic Arts Monk laces physical strikes with magic, while the Arcane Archer Fighter weaves spells directly into ranged attacks. It is a smart move to make magic feel like something the whole party can engage with, not just the dedicated casters.
Nine arcane factions
This is the part that has me most excited as a DM. Arcana Unleashed introduces nine arcane factions, each with its own leadership structure, renown rewards, bastion facilities, and political rivalries. The Horizon Weavers chart the multiverse through Conjuration, the Bejeweled Conclave trade in secrets through Enchantment, the Covenant of the Grave work alongside Necromancy, and the shadowy Ninth Quill steal dangerous knowledge from anyone foolish enough to leave it unguarded.
Ten new backgrounds, most tied directly to a faction, mean you can embed characters into this political landscape from the moment of character creation. For DMs who love faction-driven play, this is a serious toolkit.
Spells, feats, and magic items
The expansion adds 33 new and revised spells, with more than half sitting at level 5 or above – so this is not just early-game flavour. Highlights include Wail of the Banshee, Iron Body, and Spirit Lantern. Over 20 new feats cover Origin, Fighting Style, General, and Epic Boon categories.
The magic item vault includes over 45 items, with a new category of evolving magic items that grow in power alongside their wielder. As someone who has always found static magic items a little underwhelming at higher levels, this is a welcome addition.
A bestiary and a starter adventure
Nineteen new magical creatures round out the expansion, including Archmages specialising in every school of magic, spell-warped Darkenbeasts, Living Spells, and the immortal CR17 mage Venger. The book also includes Tomb of the Shadow Serpents, a level 1, one-to-two session adventure designed to put the new content into play immediately.
Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall
The companion adventure is a full level 11-20 campaign set in Thay, framed as a magical spy thriller. Szass Tam is poised to unleash a demonic undead horde, and your party is the only thing standing in the way. The book includes a full Thay gazetteer, six high-CR creatures including a stat block for Szass Tam himself, 14 magic items, and over 20 dedicated maps.
High-level play is notoriously difficult to run well, and the inclusion of specific guidance on how to play Szass Tam is the kind of DM support that makes the difference between a climactic finale and a frustrating one.
The map pack and ultimate bundle
A physical and digital map pack is available alongside the two books, covering ten tactical maps across wizard academies, ritual chambers, arcane citadels, and war-torn magical provinces. The Arcana Unleashed Ultimate Bundle – which includes both books, the map pack, and digital pre-order bonuses – is priced at $129.99, saving $34.95 over buying separately.
Pre-ordering any part of the release unlocks the Arcane Mastery Digital Dice set, a play-along pack, and a mini-adventure called Web of the Red Wizards.
