For the first time since 2024, players can buy individual content on D&D Beyond again.
It’s a change that divided the D&D community when it was removed, and now it’s quietly making its return. D&D Beyond has officially introduced Class and Species Starter Packs, bringing back a form of a la carte purchasing to the platform for the first time since Wizards of the Coast removed piecemeal purchases in early 2024
That removal required users to buy full digital rulebooks to access any subclass, spell, or feat. The new Starter Packs won’t restore the old purchase model, but they do mean a step back toward lower-cost entry points for new and casual players.
What’s in a Starter Pack?
There are 13 Starter Packs available at launch, priced at $4.99 each. Each class pack gives access to three subclasses, two backgrounds, and seven feats. Every pack also includes two species drawn from Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse, a pre-made Level 3 character, and a class-themed digital dice set.
All 12 core classes from the 2024 Player’s Handbook are covered, with subclasses chosen from options that aren’t available in the free Basic Rules. Below is a quick look at what each pack contains:
Barbarian – Path of the Wild Heart, World Tree and Zealot subclasses, with the Bugbear and Goblin species and the Elder Flame Dice Set.
Bard – College of Dance, Glamour and Valor subclasses, with the Hobgoblin and Satyr species and the Aurora Borealis Dice Set.
Cleric, the Domains of Light, Trickery and War, with the Githzerai and Tortle species and the Mythic Dice Set.
Druid – Circle of the Moon, Sea and Stars subclasses, with the Eladrin and Triton species and the Flourishing Dice Set.
Fighter – Battle Master, Eldritch Knight and Psi Warrior subclasses, with the Duergar and Minotaur species and the Red Dragon Dice Set.
Monk – Warrior of Mercy, Shadow and Elements subclasses, with the Harengon and Lizardfolk species and the Sanguine Dice Set.
Paladin – Oath of Glory, Ancients and Vengeance subclasses, with the Aarakocra and Githyanki species and the Scholar’s Dice Set.
Ranger – Beast Master, Fey Wanderer and Gloom Stalker subclasses, with the Centaur and Sea Elf species and the Space Guppy Dice Set.
Rogue – Arcane Trickster, Assassin and Soul Knife subclasses, with the Deep Gnome and Tabaxi species and the Leather Armor Dice Set.
Sorcerer – Aberrant Sorcery, Clockwork Sorcery and Wild Magic Sorcery subclasses, with the Fairy and Kenku species and the Researcher’s Dice Set.
Warlock – the Archfey, Celestial and Great Old One Patron subclasses, with the Kobold and Yuan-ti species and the Cauldron Dice Set.
Wizard – Abjurer, Diviner and Illusionist subclasses, with the Firbolg and Shadar-Kai species and the Archmage’s Favor Dice Set.
The Eberron Species Pack
Alongside the class packs, there is also an Eberron Species Pack, which uses content from the 2025 sourcebook Eberron: Forge of the Artificer. It includes complete 5.5E rules for five species: the Changeling, Kalashtar, Khoravar, Shifter and Warforged, along with The Airships of Eberron Digital Dice Set.
Why does this matter?
The removal of a la carte purchases back in 2024 was controversial, and for good reason. Not every player wants to spend $30 on a full digital book just to try a single subclass. These new packs seem aimed at new players who haven’t picked up the 2024 Player’s Handbook and don’t want to shell out $50 for the hardcover or $30 for the digital version.
Whether this expands further will remain to be seen. It’s still an open question whether Wizards of the Coast will introduce similar Starter Packs for existing products or for upcoming releases like Ravenloft: The Horrors Within. But as a start, it’s a welcome change of direction
