System Reference Document 5.2 (aka. SRD 5.2) will officially launch on April 22, 2025, under Creative Commons license. This is a big milestone for content creators and small publishers who might want to publish supplements to the newest version of D&D
The SRD will include the basic rules from the 2024 rulebooks, with the new additions like weapon mastery properties, bastions and new versions of classes. It is being released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC-BY-4.0) license, so that the core gameplay elements of D&D will remain free to use or expand on by anyone wanting to publish homemade D&D content. The old SRD 5.1 supplement is still running for people who want to make content under the previous (2014) ruleset. There will be updates to the SRD as rules are amended.
Supporting the transition
Wizards is also making a new conversion guide to help publishers or even players at home update content made in the past so it fits the new rules.
In addition a new creator FAQ Page will serve as a place to find information about licensing and D&D homebrew tools.
Not the basic rules
Wizards is also introducing the D&D Beyond Basic Rules, a free online resource for players and Dungeon Masters. However, unlike the SRD, these Basic Rules are not released under Creative Commons, so should not be used as a resource for content creation.
Looking forward
Wizards of the Coast stressed their enthusiasm to support the third party creator community behind D&D. “We’re grateful for the incredible community of third-party creators and the players who bring their adventures to life…our goal is to offer tools that help support the creativity already thriving in the D&D community.”
SRD 5.2 can be found on D&D Beyond from April 22.
