About the campaign

Deadfall is a high stakes spy thriller and espionage campaign spread across 128 pages. It takes players to the nation of Thay, known for its wizardly hierarchy and attempts to subjugated and disrupt other nations (much like we saw in Honour Among Thieves).
The adventure is unusual as it tackles high level gameplay, taking players from levels 12-20. Most official campaigns have dealt with levels 1-12 with Vecna: Eve of Ruin being a notable exception.
Progressed timeline and lore

The book includes a gazetteer of lore on Thay. The nation was an unusual omission from the Forgotten Realms books, but it seems Deadfall was the reason why. Most of the lore will be familiar to those aware of the history of Thay, but some things have changed.
It remains ruled by a council of wizards known as Zulkirs. Each is a master of a school of magic. Magically inclined individuals are favoured and are able to advance themselves politically in Thay. The infamous lich, Szass Tam remains a Zulkir and not only seeks to regain his regency as the supreme leader of Thay, but intends to do so by force.
The timeline has progressed since Thay was last explored though, and players can expect a few changes to the lore. Most notably, a good aligned wizard has risen to the rank of Zulkir known as Xelnene Thrul. She is not only a powerful wizard, but also the descendant of former Zulkir (and mass murderer), Azbar Thrul. Xelnene though, desires for Thay to prosper, but she faces significant challenges among the less altruistic members of the council.
Plot and premise

As is Szass Tam’s nature, he is not satisfied with anything other than absolute power and control. He seeks to take the nation of Thay by force, intending to infuse his undead legion with demonic powers and unleash them on the nation through the dreaded Malefice Mortem spell. By doing so, he will take ultimate control of Thay.
However, Zulkir Thrul is on to Tam and his schemes, though her warnings have all been dismissed by the other Zulkirs. That’s where the adventure kicks off, with the players working with Thrul to stop Tam using spycraft and espionage.
Handling spycraft
Spycraft isn’t usually an integral part of a campaign. Players might choose to use it as an option, but it’s rarely integral. Because of this, the book includes advice on how to run espionage in a campaign. This includes advice on what to do if players are terrible at keeping secrets, for example.
The usual necessities
As with any campaign book, you can expect the usual necessities like maps, monster stat blocks and magic items. These are all present and available in Deadfall.
